February 1st, 2018
Training to become a Master Gardener Volunteer will be hosted in Oneida County from February 8, 2018 through July 12, 2018. The cost is $100, which includes 36 hours of training, a training manual, and one year memberships at the state and local level. Classes will meet EVERY OTHER THURSDAY from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the UW-Extension Office of Oneida County, located in the Lower Level of the Airport in Rhinelander, WI.
Interested participants are required to attend an Orientation about the Master Gardener Volunteer program on February 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the UW-Extension Conference Room at the Rhinelander Airport, located in the lower level of the terminal. Registration paperwork can be obtained ahead of time at the Extension Office in Oneida County. It is the goal for all registration material to be completed and submitted at Orientation. There will be a required Volunteer Agreement, Consent to Background Check, and Criminal Background Check as part of the registration. Registration material will also be available that evening. A class manual and other perks will be included as part of the $100 payment, due the night of Orientation. The deadline to apply for the program is February 8, 2018, which is the first day of class. Refunds may be less processing and handling; no refunds after class begins.
Students will have assigned reading and watch video lectures at home. Class time will be for students to inquire about the lecture content, test their skills in applying knowledge, and interact with one another in labs and hands-on activities. Topics include: botany, soils, integrated pest management, weeds & wildlife, entomology, plant pathology, general gardening practices, herbaceous ornamentals, woody ornamentals, vegetables, and lawns.
