Featured Projects

Transforming a School Garden

Iron County Master Gardener Volunteers and 4-H members and volunteers converted several underutilized vegetable beds at the Hurley School garden into perennial pollinator beds. With Iron County’s limited growing season most of the vegetable production takes place when students are not in school. By adding some perennial beds to the garden there will be a greater opportunity for educational programs during the school year.

Revitalizing a Trailhead

MGV’s rehabilitated a neglected Iron Horse trailhead in Hurley. They pulled weeds and removed dead and dying shrubs. After planting new perennials and annuals, and mulching, they increased the curb appeal of the city of Hurley to the thousands of annual trail users visiting the area. They will continue to maintain the new plantings and work with the Chamber of Commerce to enhance the space over the next couple of years.

Creating a Pollinator Haven

The Friends of the Miners Memorial Park and MGV’s are developing pollinator gardens in an overgrown portion of the park.  They are removing invasive plants and replanting with native wildflowers to attract a wide range of pollinators. The are specifically building habitats for monarch butterflies by planting several species of milkweed. They have enrolled the gardens in the National Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program to help researchers understand the health of our monarch butterfly populations.
