Master Gardener Program in Portage County 2015

The Master Gardener Program in Portage Co. started in 1991. Over 314 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 60 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. UWEX Agriculture Agent Ken Schroeder facilitates the MG Program in Portage Co.

Garden Dreams

Subzero temperatures greeted 128 registrants to the Lettie Jensen Community Center. Rob Zimmer, the Yard MD, gave a great talk on native plants to attract birds and butterflies into your yard right up until fall migration. He also had an afternoon session on garden art. Megan Cain, the Creative Vegetable Gardener, gave a delightful talk on vegetable gardening mistakes and how to avoid them. Participants received 4.5 hours of education and a delicious hot meal thanks to Ambrosia.

Annual May Plant Sale

This year in conjunction with our annual plant sale we teamed up with UW-Extension specialist Amanda Gevens to educate citizens of Portage Co. about late blight. Since we are one of the leading producers of potatoes this is an important disease. With every plant purchased the customer received a free “Iron Lady” tomato plant that is resistant to late blight along with an explanation and UWEX contact information. Displays, posters and MGVs were also available to educate. It was a huge success.

Stevens Point Farmers Market

Every Saturday from May through September, 4 MGVs staff a booth at the Stevens Point Farmers Market. This year was especially important because vital information about late blight and spotted wing drosophila was needed in the community. MGVs were able to communicate with small growers as well as local homeowners about disease or insect prevention as well as proper disposal of infested material. This booth also gives UWEX a visible presence in the community as a resource for research-based information.
