Master Gardener Program in Dunn County 2015

The Master Gardener Program in Dunn County started in 2010. Over 75 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 16 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Ag Agent Katie Wantoch.

Wakanda Elementary School Garden

School Art Specialist and MGV Sally Johnson worked with UW-Stout Farm to School Outreach Members and PTO members to build garden boxes for each grade level. 3rd grade planted lettuce in the spring and provided some for the salad bar on the last week of school. During spring and summer each grade level planted vegetables (tomatoes, beans, corn, kale, kohlrabi, miniature pumpkins, and sunflowers). We were able to donate a substantial amount of produce to the Stepping Stones Food Pantry. In the fall, 3rd grade made salsa from produce grown from the school garden for our PTO Kick-Off Meeting.

Flower Garden at the Dunn Co. Veterans Memorial

This is the second year MGVs have planted the Flower Garden and maintained it for Main Street of Menomonie. We have done our best to meet their request for red, white and blue flowers (harder than it sounds because there aren’t many truly blue flowers). The flowers are labeled for those interested in viewing them.

Dunn County Jail Garden

The garden was started in 2010 with the intention of allowing Huber/Work Release inmates and volunteers to grow produce that would be donated to the Stepping Stones Food Pantry. Five seasons later, the garden has expanded to 34,000Ō2 surrounded by a permanent fence. Over 12,000 lbs. of vegetables (from beets to zucchini) and fruit (from apples to strawberries) have been delivered to the food pantry. MGVs have been providing assistance from the beginning, including soil sampling, garden layout, and providing education to the inmates on planting, growing, and harvesting the produce.
