Master Gardener Program in Dodge County 2015

The Master Gardener Program in Dodge County started in 2004. Over 165 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 40 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Community Development agent Jeff Hoffman.

Gardening for Gold Fall Symposium

We hosted the first Gardening for Gold Fall Symposium on November 1st. The day-long event was held at the Horicon Marsh Education Center and was attended by gardening enthusiasts from all over Wisconsin. There were three speakers: Rob Zimmer – A Garden for the Senses, Liz Herzmann – Birds, Wildlife and the Native Garden, and Beth Hanna – Enjoying Edible Landscapes. Guests had an opportunity to bid on over fiŌy silent auction items.

Youth Master Gardener Association

We started two chapters of Youth Master Gardener Associations in the county this summer. They began with MGVs working in summer school at two elementary schools with the teachers and 20-30 students. After summer school was over, classes continued at the gardens with 6-8 students in attendance. Once the growing season was over, the program shifted to an after-school event. The program is designed for students to become “certified” just as their adult counterparts though service and learning activities.

Senior Expo Booths

In May and September MGVs gave gardening presentations and staffed a booth at Senior Expo. In May, a MGV presented Container Gardening and in September she spoke on Puƫng your Garden to Bed in the Fall. In each case, display materials in the booth followed the same theme as the talk. Participants listened to the presentations and visited the booth to ask follow-up questions. They could also spin the “Wheel of Wisdom” and answer a gardening-related question to win a prize.
