The Master Gardener Program in Shawano County started in 2007. Over 45 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 17 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Agriculture Agent Jamie Patton.
Engaging Inmates in Gardening
MGVs have worked with the Shawano County Huber Center to engage inmates in gardening activities for the past eight years. MGVs assist and train inmates in planting and tending the 5,000 square foot garden there, with all fresh produce being used at the county’s correctional facilities. In 2015, approximately 800 pounds of fresh produce was grown in the Center’s garden. It is estimated the garden saved the county$1,200 in food costs over the summer.
Gardening Questions Answered
Community members with gardening questions can visit the Wolf River Master Gardener booth at the Shawano Farmer’s Market. Each week, MGVs created a new and inviting educational display highlighting a seasonal gardening topic or plant, and answered 10-30 questions on a wide variety of horticultural topics. With this year’s bumper tomato crop, the MGVs partnered with the Shawano County Agriculture and Family Living Agents to provide timely information and demonstrations on tomato production, pests and proper canning techniques.
Gardening Workshops for Menominee Nation
MGVs co-taught seven gardening workshops during the summer in Menominee County/Nation with the Shawano Co. Ag Agent. Workshops emphasized practical information pertaining to local food production, including gardening basics, container gardening, composting and sustainable gardening, seed saving, IPM, and soil health. The more than 100 total workshop attendees also learned gardening vocabulary in the Menominee language at the start of each workshop from the Menominee County/nation Community and Natural Resources Agent.
