The Master Gardener Program in Chippewa County

The Master Gardener Program in Chippewa County started in 1999. Over 210 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 21 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Agriculture Agent Jerry Clark.

Demonstration Pollinator Garden Created

MGVs completed the 2015 phase of the Northern WI State Fair Pollinator Demonstration Garden In August. The Monarch Waystation butterfly garden was planted, bloomed, and hosted its first painted lady caterpillar. A songbird shrub garden is also doing well, and a 308 Ō2 plot is covered with newspaper, mulched, and ready to be planted in the spring. Since the fairgrounds are used throughout the summer, the garden will have high visibility and potential to educate the public about pollinators.

Junior Gardeners Learn at the Bloomer Library

As part of a healthy living campaign, Mayo Clinic teamed with the Bloomer Public Library and MGVs to provide a Junior Gardening Program at the library this summer. Children met weekly for a brief lesson to learn gardening tips from MGVs; planted and tended plants in the Bloomer Community Gardens; and reflected on their experience at the garden. Journal entries were recorded on the weather conditions and the growth of the plants. Junior Gardeners ended their last session with a Garden Party at an assisted living facility where they shared their produce with the residents.

Community Gardens Booth

MGVs, in collaboration with other partners, provided community gardening opportunities for residents in Bloomer and Chippewa Falls with 52 garden plots and 6 raised beds. MGVs provided leadership and organizational components for the program that included 41 individuals and eleven organizations this year. The community gardens are a sustainable addition to the city park system that is a destination for city residents and visitors.
