The Master Gardener Program in Oneida County started in 1999. Over 300 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 26 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX staff member facilitating the MG Program is Anne Williams.
Food Plants Distributed to Food Pantry Clients
MGVs grew and distributed 2000 vegetable plants to clients of the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry. Plants were grown in 200 square foot greenhouse constructed in cooperation with the food pantry and the local Kiwanis Club. Plants grown were tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, broccoli, and squash. MGVs provided advice to clients of the food pantry on how to care for and grow the vegetables. Our efforts helped families develop food security by growing their own food.
Community Garden Produces
The Rhinelander Area Community Garden ’s mission is to grow fresh produce for the local food pantry; to educate the community about growing food; and to promote sustainable gardening practices. This year over 3000 pounds of fresh produce grown in the garden was distributed to clients through the food pantry. MGVs and community volunteers planted and maintained the food producing plots throughout the year. MGvs also offered advice to help educate others about growing their own food.
Teaching Children about Vegetables
MGVs continue to work on a school vegetable garden with Old School Arts & Learning Care center in Rhinelander. MGVs provided seeds and vegetable plants and worked with children and teachers to plant and maintain the garden. This year included an expanded container garden. Nutrition education and taste testing is a significant component of this project — children have the opportunity to try new vegetables and learn about the importance of eating a variety of vegetables.
