Master Gardener Program in Brown County 2015

The Master Gardener Program in Brown County started in 1979. Over 300 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 69 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Horticulture Educator Vijai Pandian.

Native Plants on the Riverwalk

MGVs planted over 1,200 native plants on the Riverwalk and Wildlife Viewing Pier in Voyageur Park along the Fox River in De Pere. About half of a narrow strip of land 180 feet long just south of the lock tenders’ house has been planted with a cover crop that will be tilled under next spring and more native plants will finish off the strip. Two 11×40 foot vegetated mats placed next to the lock tenders’ house patio are filled with hundreds of pre-planted native flora that will enhance the area and provide wildlife habitat.

YMCA Children’s Garden Reconstructed

Due to city construction, the Howard YMCA Children’s Garden had to be moved and reconstructed. The new garden has ten raised beds, two arbors, and two long perennial planters (one insulated and one not insulated as a test for overwintering the perennials), and a “workstation” to assist with teaching the children. The theme was pollination, so MGVs planted flowers, both perennials and annuals, to bring in pollinators.

Unity Hospice Garden Revamped

MGVs redid the weedy and overgrown butterfly garden at Unity Hospice and Palliative Care Center this summer. Cup plants were dug out with some replanted in a swampy edge. Butterfly weeds, smooth aster,   Mexican   hyssop, and echinacea were planted to serve as larval host and adult food plants for monarchs. Plants came from MGVs’ home gardens and from a donation by an MGV in her mother’s name. We are in the process of registering this garden as an official Monarch Waystation.
