Kids Learn About Gardening

Bloom’n Kids School and Community Garden is located next to the Hayward Primary and Intermediate school grounds. The outdoor classroom focuses on hands-on horticulture instruction for K-4 grades. MGVs and other community members assist teachers with instruction and take leadership in organizing activities in the garden. Produce from the garden is served in school and donated to needy families.

Vegetable Transplants for Veterans

To help engage military veterans and their families in gardening, MGVs partnered with the Veterans Service Offices in Burnett, Sawyer, Washburn, and Lac Courte Oreilles (LCO) Ojibwa Tribe. Donations of vegetable transplants were made to the Sawyer County Veterans and LCO College Farm so they could grow their own food. In the past few years we have received many thanks and appreciation from veterans who received these gifts and even received a few follow-up pictures and cards.

Senior Center Grows Vegetables

When the Hayward Area Senior Center created a greenspace and patio area, MGVs donated funds for raised beds and benches and other needed improvements to make the space more functional. This garden area allows visitors an opportunity to help grow vegetables that are used in meals served at the facility. It is also used for respite care for individuals who are normally housebound. MGVs also assisted with training programs at the center on topics such as “Small Space Gardening” and “Horticultural Therapy”.
