The Master Gardener Program in Waushara County

The Master Gardener Program in Waushara County started in 2001. Over 165 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 37 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Agriculture Agent Ken Williams.

Community Garden Created in Redgranite

MGVs partnered with the Waushara Co. Prevention Counsel Vision 2020 Committee, St. Mark’s church and the Redgranite community to develop several raised beds as a public community garden. MGVs held two workshops on site to demonstrate how to build the beds and explained planting techniques. There is room for expansion and plans to do so next year with increased interest.

Container Planting Project Encourages Kids to Grow

MGVs had a hands-on planting project for 150 children at Blue Ribbon Kids Day. MGVs provided vegetable and flower seeds, along with planting medium and mini greenhouse containers. Each child was guided in how to plant the seed of their choice and took home their completed project, along with care instructions, so they could grow their own sunflower or tomato. There was such enthusiasm that even though we brought even more supplies than the year before, we ran out of some things near the end and plan to bring even more next year.

Gardeners Learn at Day-Long Seminar

Our annual spring seminar Gardening in Tune with Nature offers a day of speakers and other educational activities for the public. This year there were presentations on creating an edible landscape, alternate gardening methods and developing perennial plant communities. One of several booths offered free UW-Extension publications on a wide variety of gardening problems and techniques, including composting. MGVs answered horticulture questions at another booth.
