The Master Gardener Program in Sauk County started in 2003. Over 265 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 31 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Horticulture Educator Phyllis Both.
Monarch Trail Benefits Butterflies and Bees
MGVs started a Monarch Trail at the Reedsburg Historical Society, planting two acres of forbs that are beneficial to monarch butterflies this fall. Nine signs created to show the life stages of the monarch will be placed along the trail in the spring. Two more acres are being dedicated to other pollinators, especially native bees, honey bees and bumble bees. During the winter we will build native bee houses and we hope to start our honey bees next spring.
Seed Library Utilized by Area Residents
Last fall some very enthusiastic local seed savers donated seeds from their own private collections to the Baraboo Seed Saver Library MGVs started that year, and many MGVs donated their first seeds to our collection. 34 individuals checked out a total of 128 seed packets. In an effort to get more people interested in the Seed Library, this spring we offered five classes at the Baraboo Public Library related to gardening. MGVs spoke on saving seeds, organic farming, deep mulch gardening, composting and vermiculture, and beginning beekeeping. Over 120 people attended the programs.
Involving Youth in Gardening
MGVs have involved children in their projects at Pioneer Log Village in Reedsburg. The Apothecary Garden created in 2013 now supplies fresh herbs to the local food pantry and many visitors tour the garden. Youth help in the garden, classes were given on gardening and the importance of pollinators, and fun projects like making brooms from the broom corn that is grown on-site. Youth also assist MGVs at the Midcontinent Railway Museum in North Freedom in planting and maintaining the gardens.
