The Master Gardener Program in Marquette County

The Master Gardener Program in Marquette County started in 1998. Over 130 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 12 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Ag Educator Lyssa Seefeldt.

Our spring educational program featured local farmer and chocolatier Lisa Nelson from Roots Chocolates in Wisconsin Dells. Lisa gave an hour presentation titled Bean to Farm: Growing a Fine Chocolate. Over 20 community attendees enjoyed Lisa’s presentation that highlighted her job, farming practices and her travel to Nicaragua. A question and answer session followed the slide show. Lisa brought a sampling of her chocolates made with ingredients she grew on her farm combined with Nicaraguan chocolate.

Fruit Tree Sale Educates Consumers

Our fruit tree sale raises funds for educational programs   for our community and encourages people to grow their own food, as our pricing makes these plants affordable to a wide range of people. Over 140 families purchased more than 1100 fruit trees and over 5000 asparagus, raspberry, grape and strawberry plants were sold. Many young families with children and enthusiastic gardeners of all ages participated, while MGVs answered their questions. We know that people are trying new plants in our county because of this program.

Chicago Botanic Gardens Bus Trip Inspires

Our annual bus trips are educational experiences and a recruiting and retention tool, as we always give an introduction to the MG program and UWEX on these trips. This was our first 2 day trip, with two guided tours and a greenhouse stop. 36 gardeners explored part of the 300 acre Chicago Botanical gardens one day, and the extensive display gardens at Northwind Perennial Farms the second day.
