Master Gardener Program in Winnebago County 2015

The Master Gardener Program in Winnebago county started in 1990. Over 520 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 104 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Horticulture Educator Kimberly Miller.

Every Saturday morning from June through September MGVs can be found at the Farmers’ Market in downtown Oshkosh helping visitors with all their gardening questions. These range from “how do I get started”, “how can I grow herbs and vegetables when I live in an apartment”, “what type of … should I plant”, “what’s wrong with my tomato plants”, “what can I grow near my walnut tree” to lots of other questions about diseases, trees, pruning, insects, and environmental concerns.

Historical Society Grounds Revived

The grounds of the Winchester Area Historical Society—which includes a house, barn, fruit orchard, and perennial flower beds, with the local history center and library in the former private home—had not been well maintained. MGVs helped restore the property to its old beauty by eradicating weeds, invasives, and grass to uncover the bones of the original garden. Community members have been excited to see the restoration and have provided labor and heirloom plants from their own gardens. The overgrown apple orchard served as a site for a free hands-on pruning workshop for the public.

New Butterfly Garden Educates, Enhances Lives

MGVs were asked to develop a butterfly garden for the grounds of the Lutheran Homes facilities. They designed and installed one focusing on native Wisconsin plants that is now a registered Monarch Waystation. As MGVs maintain the garden, they are visited by residents and visitors, who have a chance to talk about their own gardening experiences, learn about butterflies and other pollinators, and to enjoy the quiet peace of the space.
