The Master Gardener Program in Fond du Lac County

The Master Gardener Program in Fond du Lac County started in 1992. Over 400 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 64 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for Community Resource Development Educator Diana Tscheschlok facilitates the MG Program.

Museum Grounds Transformed

In 2013, the Fond du Lac Children’s Museum expanded to a new building with an outdoor play space. MGVs have made that space into a fun, educational area for visiting children. MGVs started and cared for 7 raised beds last year, and this year added a 25-plant butterfly garden, which is now a certified Monarch WayStation. Children can start fruit, herb, and vegetable seeds indoors at the museum and plant them outdoors in the spring. Museum staff report that children are learning an increasing connection with the natural world.

Kids Engaged in Elementary School Gardens

At Riverside School MGVs educated students on seed starting and observing germination, planting seeds, and transplanting plants which were started from seed in the classrooms. At Parkside School MGVs planted seeds with each class for over 350 children. Each class planted different seeds, and we taught cool crops and germination with games. We spent two days planting in the garden with every child and also taught them about bees and pollination, as well as composting.

Junior Master Gardeners Learn to Eat Veggies

From the beginning of April through the middle of October, MGVs made 162 educational contacts with children, including some members of the Boys and Girls Club, and their parents as they learned to garden. For the final celebration, children cooked a meal and created centerpiece bouquets for their parents and guardians. Participants also delivered extra produce to the local food pantries and their families. 88% of the youth sampled new fruits and vegetables during the program.
