The Master Gardener Program in Adams County

The Master Gardener Program in Adams County started in 1997. Over 170 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 15 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Agriculture Agent Ken Cleveland.

MGVs provided seeds and training to help educate local elementary school students on proper garden preparation and seed planting in their seasonal garden. Vegetables included cherry tomatoes, carrots, squash and pumpkins. Once harvested, the vegetables were displayed in the principal’s office to show the success of the garden. Aferwards, the students could pick and take home their favorite vegetables to enjoy with their families. 40 students gained better access to healthy food and learned how to grow their own plants.

Tree and Fruit Sale Educates Consumers

Our fruit and tree sale, with pricing that makes these plants affordable to a wide range of people, raises funds for our student scholarship program and encourages people to grow their own food. Over 250 families purchased more than 300 fruit trees and over 1,980 asparagus, blackberry, blueberry, strawberry and grape plants. Many families with children participated and MGVs answered questions about the plants so each family would have a better chance to reap the benefits of a garden.

Adams Co. Fair Booth

The focus of the fair booth was all about flowering plants. Parents and children were allowed to pick out small annual plants and pots, and then MGVs showed them how to properly plant them. These activities were was supported and paid for by our local partner Ace Hardware. More than 500 plants were potted and given away along with 100’s of free seed packets. It was a huge success and we hope to continue this as an annual event to reach and excite more people and children about horticulture.
